Sewer System
Homestead Valley Sanitary District provides sewage collection services to its residents. It also has responsibility for the collection of refuse within the district, currently this function is provided under contract by Mill Valley Refuse Service.
The majority of the HVSD sewer system was constructed in the late 1940s and early ‘50s, and consists of approximately thirteen miles of sewers, mostly of vitrified clay pipe. Over the years, due to ground shifting and other factors the pipes have developed cracks, offset joints and other problems typical of such systems, and is subject to considerable root-intrusion and infiltration of ground water. Accordingly, fifteen years ago the District embarked on a program to replace and/or rehabilitate the old pipes through a phased program. To date we have televised most of the District’s system, to search out and prioritize problem sections, and have replaced approximately 15,000 feet of the old clay pipe with modern plastic pipe which is expected to last for many years.
Our primary emergency contractor is Roto-Rooter of Novato. Their phone number is 415 898-2700. Call either them or our district at 415 388-4796 if you have any problems or spot a leak. The latter part is very important. Our manager is also available by cell phone at (415) 725-7852. Please do not hesitate to call, it is impossible for us to patrol the whole valley so the only way we will know of, and to fix, a leak is by you being our eyes.
